A year and a half ago, Jenn Gilman and Heather Carroll rolled up to Carson Field in Hingham with one goal: offer adults and children healthy breakfast and lunch options and an undeniably delicious cup of coffee. So far the presence of their food truck, The Rolling Roost, has been similar to the play on the sports fields it serves—a home run.
The Rolling Roost’s menu focuses on handcrafted gourmet sandwiches and salads made from organic ingredients. Gilman says the name reflects the pair’s love for raising chickens, as well as their desire to create a place where family and friends can “roost.” “Heather and I saw a need in our community; it was always a struggle to find healthy food and a good cup of coffee at a place that was convenient while going from game to game,” says Gilman. “So after years of talking about it, we started The Rolling Roost. Our combined backgrounds in business, restaurant management and catering were a great fit.”
The Rolling Roost serves a variety of options from organic eggs and veggie burgers to pulled pork, roasted turkey and grilled cheese. “We don’t like to pigeon hole ourselves so we try to offer something for everyone,” shares Gilman. “A day at the field is always a family affair.” Perhaps best known for its breakfasts and homemade sauces, The Rolling Roost gets raves for its twist on a classic egg sandwich: eggs and cheese on a whole wheat English muffin that’s then topped with prosciutto, arugula and a signature “green goddess” sauce (a mix of Greek yogurt, light mayo, lemon, garlic and fresh herbs).
In the future, Gilman and Carroll have exciting plans for The Rolling Roost, including catering for private events and sourcing their ingredients from local purveyors. You can find The Rolling Roost at Carson Field every weekend. —Courtney Raymond
